I had to share this video of the home artist Doug Aitken has built himself in Venice, Calif. I don’t think I have been so moved by a space in some time. I want to be in that home. I love the wood table. It’s like a home David Byrne would have built. Plus, I love that the Times called it Acid Modernism.
Right now I’m also being inspired by:
- Geometric shapes, especially these earrings.
- Wide open spaces. Josh and I just got back from the desert. I love the desert so much.
- Patti Smith. Big surprise, but she is so sweet and tender in recount of her life with Robert Mapplethorpe I can’t help but to fall in love with her in a different way. She won my heart as a teenager when MTV went to interview her and her house was a mess and she was so authentic I could barely stand it. Plus all her talk of the early days of being broke in NY and the descriptions of young women in Victorian era dresses makes me fall in love with this number even more.

April 4, 2012 at 9:43 AMJust Kids was my favorite book I read last year. Highly recommend to anyone. Doesn't it make you want to whole up in an apartment somewhere with another artist? I'll have to seek out that MTV interview.
Also loved the Acid Modernism.

April 4, 2012 at 10:16 AMI love that you reread after posting, just like me. Just Kids did make me want to do the work. If you find the MTV interview, let me know. I looked, but I didn't unearth it.

May 25, 2012 at 9:45 AMLike Blake, I've been meaning to read Patti's book for ages, too. I've only heard great things about it. Now I *will* do it! And I wholeheartedly agree about the house. When I saw the images last Sunday in the NYT, I immediately ripped them out and now have them squirreled away in my inspiration folder. 🙂
