Inspiration San Diego

What I learned from Y15

This week was San Diego AIGA’s Y15. It’s a design conference that has been held in San Diego, you guessed it, for the last 15 years. I have attended the last 4 years and I always come away with some inspiration and lessons learned. It’s great to be at an intimate conference like the Y because you get access to the speakers, which is amazing.

I loved the talks this year. They were really inspiring. The one common thread that inspired me the most was how truly authentic my favorite speakers were. I love that. I love people who are themselves no matter what. There isn’t a show or act, it’s just them. I’m writing this post to remind myself to always present my authentic self and don’t hide what is great about me.

The images above are from some of my favorite speakers:

Doyald Young: I always enjoy my discussions with Doyald. He’s amazing and funny. He will be publishing a new book on Learning Curves. I can’t wait.

Jen Bilik: I love her products and used to sell them when I had a store. It was so great to hear her speak. She has a great sense of self and business, which can be hard to find.

Jacob Tröllback: Out there. I loved his presentation. I related to his style and how he finds inspiration.

We have AIGA conferences here but I've not been to one yet. Haven't gone because I don't know anything about it. Now I may have to check it out! I'd love to have all of those books on logos and type. And I've had the library book set on my wishlist for awhile now! Damn spending freeze…

I love Doyald's books. They are amazing. I've learned so much from them. I was actually thinking of rereading Fonts and Logos. Especially since Doyald was saying no one reads anymore.
